A cough lingering after a virus is normal. A cough with fever, weight loss or blood is not.CLIA #45D2048957 · CAP #8722734 · Same-day results · Walk-ins welcome
A post-viral cough can persist for weeks — influenza destroys ciliated airway cells, and they take time to regrow. That is normal and does not need an antibiotic. What is not normal: a cough with recurring fever, weight loss, night sweats, coughing blood, worsening breathlessness, or one that drags past three to four weeks without improving.

What to consider when it will not stop
| Possibility | Clue |
|---|---|
| Post-viral cough | Improving slowly; no fever — why the cilia take time |
| Mycoplasma pneumoniae | Dry cough for weeks; beta-lactams did nothing — see this |
| Pertussis | Paroxysms, whooping, post-tussive vomiting — needs clinical care |
| Secondary bacterial pneumonia | Improved, then worsened again with fever — see a physician |
| Asthma, reflux, post-nasal drip, medication side effect | Not infectious at all — a clinical workup |
Go to an emergency department, not a lab, if you have: shortness of breath at rest, chest pain or pressure, blue lips, confusion, or a child breathing fast, grunting, or pulling in at the ribs.
We name drugs, never doses. Treatment statements follow CDC and IDSA guidance; dose and duration are a physician's decision.
Why same-day matters in respiratory illness. Influenza antivirals work best within 48 hours of onset. Swab by 1:00 PM → result at 4:30 PM → licensed physician (partner network) 4:30–6:00 PM. Two stops, both the same day.
FAQ
- Do I need an antibiotic for a lingering cough?
- Usually not. Most are post-viral. Testing is how you avoid taking one you do not need.
- Could it be Mycoplasma?
- If it has lasted weeks and amoxicillin did nothing, that is the classic pattern. It can be tested.
- When do I need a chest X-ray?
- If there is fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or blood. That is a clinical decision — see a physician.
- Can you test today?
- Yes. Same-day result at 4:30 PM.
