Watery stool dilutes elastase. A low result on a liquid sample can be an artifact.CLIA #45D2048957 · CAP #8722734 · Same-day results · Walk-ins welcome
Fecal elastase-1 estimates exocrine pancreatic function. A low value suggests exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) — the pancreas is not producing enough digestive enzymes, which causes greasy, floating, foul-smelling stool, bloating and weight loss. The classic pitfall: a watery specimen dilutes the enzyme and yields a falsely low result. Collection quality is part of the test.

Interpreting it honestly

ScenarioReading
Low elastase, formed stool, typical symptomsSupports EPI — clinical evaluation follows
Low elastase, watery stoolPossible dilution artifact — repeat on a formed sample
Normal elastase, ongoing symptomsLook elsewhere — celiac, IBD, SIBO, parasites

EPI is associated with chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic surgery, cystic fibrosis and diabetes among other causes. The test suggests the state; it does not explain why — and the why is a physician's job.

We name drugs, never doses. Treatment statements follow ACG, AGA, IDSA and CDC guidance; dose and duration are a physician's decision.
Same day, start to finish. Sample by 1:00 PM → results at 4:30 PM → if treatment is clinically appropriate, a licensed physician in our partner network sees you between 4:30 and 6:00 PM, a few minutes away. That window is reserved for patients tested here, and your slot is held the moment we take your sample — the slot is held, not hunted. On your own, a same-day appointment is nearly impossible; at an urgent care, you wait in the queue. STAT: ~2 hours, sample in by 3:00 PM.

FAQ

What is the treatment?
Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, guided by a physician, alongside treating the underlying cause.
Do enzymes affect the test?
Follow the physician's instructions on timing — this matters for accuracy.
Could this be celiac instead?
Symptoms overlap. See celiac testing — and do not go gluten-free first.
Can you test for parasites at the same time?
Yes. Chronic malabsorptive symptoms deserve both questions asked.
