When Can You Actually Go Back to Work or School?

Do not repeat a PCR to prove you are clear. CDC guidance is based on symptoms and time.CLIA #45D2048957 · CAP #8722734 · Same-day results · Walk-ins welcome
CDC's respiratory virus guidance bases return on symptom improvement and being fever-free without fever-reducing medication for a defined period — not on producing a negative PCR. That matters, because PCR can stay positive for weeks after you are no longer infectious. Chasing a negative test is a way to stay home longer than necessary and to spend money for no reason.

What we can and cannot provide
| Your employer wants… | Reality |
|---|---|
| Documentation of a diagnosis | We provide your test result — that is a document you can present |
| A negative PCR before return | Not recommended by CDC after COVID; a positive can persist long after infectiousness ends |
| A clearance decision | Made by your employer and, in food handling and healthcare, by the regulatory authority — food handlers |
| Timing rules | Follow current CDC respiratory virus guidance and your employer's policy |
A laboratory that promises to "clear you for work" is describing a decision that is not a laboratory's to make. We give you an accurate result and the honest context.
Go to an emergency department, not a lab, if you have: shortness of breath at rest, chest pain or pressure, blue lips, confusion, or a child breathing fast, grunting, or pulling in at the ribs.
Why same-day matters in respiratory illness. Influenza antivirals work best within 48 hours of onset. Swab by 1:00 PM → result at 4:30 PM → licensed physician (partner network) 4:30–6:00 PM. Two stops, both the same day.
FAQ
- Will you write a note saying I am not contagious?
- No — nobody can honestly certify that from a PCR. We document your result and the collection date.
- My workplace demands a negative test.
- Many still do. We will run it, but you should know CDC does not recommend using PCR that way after COVID.
- What about school?
- Schools follow local health guidance. Your result plus symptom resolution is generally what is required.
- How fast is the result?
- Same day at 4:30 PM.
