Because they are close relatives — both picornaviruses, with substantial genetic similarity in the regions assays target. Many multiplex panels therefore report them as a single combined target, "Rhinovirus/Enterovirus." That is not a limitation being hidden; it is a limitation being stated. Rhinovirus is the classic common cold; enteroviruses cause a broader range of illness, including — in specific serotypes — more serious disease.

What the combined result tells you

Finding	Interpretation
Rhinovirus/Enterovirus detected	A picornavirus is present — most commonly rhinovirus, i.e. a cold
Flu and COVID negative	No antiviral indicated; no antibiotic indicated
Severe or unusual illness	Specific enterovirus identification may be warranted — a clinical and public-health decision

A common cold diagnosis has real value: it is the clearest possible reason not to take an antibiotic.

Go to an emergency department, not a lab, if you have: shortness of breath at rest, chest pain or pressure, blue lips, confusion, or a child breathing fast, grunting, or pulling in at the ribs.

We name drugs, never doses. Treatment statements follow CDC and IDSA guidance; dose and duration are a physician's decision.

Why same-day matters in respiratory illness. Influenza antivirals work best within 48 hours of onset. Swab by 1:00 PM → result at 4:30 PM → licensed physician (partner network) 4:30–6:00 PM. Two stops, both the same day.
